As evidenced by previous posts on Dexateens (here & here), TDR’s affinity for the band comes as no surprise to loyal readers.  Surely news of the band’s upcoming album would be a note worthy event. Dexateens’ Latest album, Singlewide will be released May 12th by SkybucketCornelius Chapel Records.  Based upon the two new songs posted to the band’s myspace page, Singlewide maybe a more acoustic affair.

Also DOWNLOAD the closing track “Can You Whoop It” (featuring David Berman)

Two Cow Garage | The Hold Steady | Jr. Juggernaut

21 05 2008

a couple quick updates:

Two Cow Garage

Sources indicate the Two Cow Garage has finished their fourth album, to be titled Speaking In Cursive, featuring 13 tracks and due in late summer (“Augustish”).

The Hold Steady

As previously reported, the Hold Steady are prepping the release of their fourth album, Stay Positive, on July 15. They have put up on myspace and for download at itunes the lead single “Sequestered in Memphis” featuring Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols on background vocals. If this single is a true representation of Stay Positive, July 15th can’t get here soon enough.

Jr. Juggernaut

Posted about this band previously, and wanted to follow up to say that this album is really good and will be getting a full review at some point in the future (see Coming Attractions). Also the download link on my previous post is now dead however the album is being streamed here so check it out while you can.

The Hold Steady | Stay Positive

7 04 2008

According to Rolling Stone the much anticipated fourth Hold Steady album Stay Positive will be released in July. The band had been posting pictures from the recording session on their webpage but a picture showing http://www.theholdsteady.com/uploaded_images/ben_finn_02-703814.jpgthe track listing on a whiteboard had been blacked out to hide the song titles. However they weren’t as careful in this photo; from which the rabid fans on the Hold Steady messageboard have figured out the track listing below.

1. Joke About Jamaica
2. Navy Sheets
3. Constructive Summer
4. Cutters
5. Stay Positive
6. Lord, I’m Discouraged
7. ?
8. Ask Her for Some Adderall (possibly)

out of at least 11 tracks

What also can be gleaned from the band’s photos are possible guests musicians (or maybe just people they met

while recording) such as Les Paul, Marky Ramone, Ben Nichols (Lucero) and possibly Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers (far left on the mixer).

The band has also played some of the new songs out and I’ve compiled those that have made it to Youtube after the jump. These should help pass the time till July.

The Dexateens | Lost & Found *FREE DOWNLOAD*

With their trademark blazing guitars, concrete back beat, and Alabama tainted vocals, The Dexateens have made a very solid twenty-four minutes of southern rock tinged pop music. Whether it be songs like “Lost & Found” and “Mary,” with Stones-esque guitar licks or the more acoustic songs like “Slender Thread” or “Kid,” Lost and Found features pop-sensibilities reminiscent of those of found in the late ’60’s or early ’70’s. This a more mature and restrained Dexateen album than one maybe used to; but it’s definitely one worth spending the time to hear.

The Dexateens are offering Lost & Found as a free download for a limited time at the links at the top & bottom of the page and one would have to be a fool not to give them a chance. They just want your email address and they’ll take donations if one feels so compelled.

This won’t be the last time I’ll be posting about this band. They’re playing some dates in May with the Drive-By Truckers and lucky for me, one of them is local.  So look for a review of their live show (along with one of the DBT) sometime after May 8.  In the mean time, download Lost & Found while you can.

Hayes Carll – Trouble in Mind (April 8)

6 03 2008

troubleinmind.jpg

I don’t know about you, but I almost always hesitate to say that I listen to country music when discussing music with others. It’s not the I’m ashamed of it, it’s just I always feel the need to qualify exactly what country music I listen to. When you say that you listen to country music, one’s mind typically goes to Garth Brooks, Allen Jackson, Kenn Chesney, and one can’t forget Big & Rich and others. [Just to clarify, all of those I listed and pretty much everything played on country radio & CMT I don't think very highly of (to say the least). Why? Well that's a rant for another day.] I then feel the need to tell about the country bands I do like, most of which are unknown to the general population. Which then tends to lead to a much longer, detailed discussion then the other person is likely interested in having. One of the names I do mention is Hayes Carll.

hayes1.jpg

Hayes Carll plays country music as it should be played, with heart, soul, and without the intervening of Nashville. Hayes is a Texas singer/songwriter in the tradition of Ray Wylie Hubbard, Steve Earl and Townes Van Zant. Trouble In Mind (out April 8 ) will be Hayes’ third album and first for Lost Highway Records and will be available on 180 gram vinyl as well as cd. Five songs from Trouble In Mind can be heard on Hayes’ Myspace page.

The track listing is as follows:

1. Drunken Poet’s Dream
2. It’s A Shame
3. Girl Downtown
4. Bad Liver And A Broken Heart
5. Beaumont
6. I Got A Gig
7. Faulkner Street
8. Wild As A Turkey
9. Don’t Let Me Fall
10. A Lover Like You
11. I Don’t Wanna Grow Up
12. Knockin’ Over Whiskeys
13. Willing To Love Again
14. She Left Me For Jesus

Hayes also has numerous live shows worth checking out on the Live Music Archive I can highly recommend his show from the Cheatham Street Warehouse on November 30, 2006 with His Imaginary Band (in other words, it’s a solo show).

Centro-matic/South San Gabriel – Dual Hawks

4 03 2008
centro-matic_bandphoto1.jpg

Denton, Texas’s band with two names, Centro-matic and South San Gabriel will be releasing a split LP in the coming months on Misra Records and have offered 5 songs from each band’s half on their myspace pages. For the uninitiated, Centro-matic and South San Gabriel (SSG) are bands that share the same members, (Will Johnson, Matt Pence, Mark Hedman, and Scott Danbom) with the only difference being that Centro-matic plays one type of indie rock while SSG plays a slightly different, more mellow style. Dual Hawks will be, as mentioned above, a split double LP containing one disc of Centro-matic and one disc of SSG. These guys have been playing together for over ten years and have released over 12 albums together (not to mention lead singer Will Johnson’s 2 solo albums). Centro-matic/SSG is the best band you’ve never heard. It’s about time you rectified that. Check out the links to the bands’ myspace pages, website and youtube videos below.

UPDATE: The latest intel gives Dual Hawks a June 3 release date.

The track listing for Dual Hawks is as follows

The Black Crowes – Warpaint (Preview)

26 02 2008

Warpaint

As I’ve said before, week from today The Black Crowes release Warpaint to the world. I haven’t been this anxious for an album for as long as I can remember. I’ve been a fan of the Crowes since they played some shows with Jimmy Page back in the fall of 1999 (huge Zeppelin fan back then), and can pretty much say that almost all of the music I listen to these days I came to thru the Crowes. I remember the release day for Lions, the only Crowes release of all new material since I joined the society of Crowe fandom. Worked all day for the DOT (summer internship) and went to Walmart on my way home to pick up the album. I of course had heard and had a copy via napster for weeks prior. Hearing it prior to the official release made getting the actual album less exciting, as the anticipation was gone. Admittedly, I had hoped that the downloaded copy was an alt version and the store bought copy would be different (read better) but it wasn’t and Lions got played a number of times and then went on the shelf to be played at irregular and few and far between intervals. That was a disappointing drive home. It’s not that Lions is a bad album per say, it’s just not the best Black Crowes album. They’re held to a higher standard as they’ve proven that they are arguably the best band of the last 20 years. A ‘bad” Crowes album is still better than 95% of all other albums released in said year.

I tried not to get my hopes up for Warpaint, Eddie and Marc are gone, the band hasn’t put out a great new song in almost 10 years let alone a great album. But after hearing the first song (and only one I’ve heard) I started getting hope that this album wouldn’t be a let down. Add to that Luther Dickinson in the lead guitar slot, expectations rise further. The band then says that they will be playing shows where they will play the new album in it’s entirety before playing a set of older songs. One reads that as the band must really like the new album and have confidence in it to do that. Expectations rise even further. Then I started reading articles such as this one on Jambase by Dennis Cook. I’d say Dennis is probably the best rock writer in the business today (and the only one I read on a regular basis) but I try to temper Dennis’s flowery prose by reminding myself that I’ve never read a disparaging word on the band by him. He has written the liner notes for the Into The Fog DVD and the Lost Crowes archive release. His opinions might have some bias but you have to like what he and the band have to say in the article. Then late last week word gets out that Maxim gave the album 2.5 stars without even hearing the album. And the Crowes call them on it and they admit that they haven’t heard it and made an educated guess of a review. I’m not going to get into the journalistic ethics of what Maxin did, I’m going to say that if Maxim gave a good review of the album I’d be wary. The fact that they rated it poorly, expectations rose further. It’s not like Maxim is known for anything more than mostly naked pretty girls (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Needless to say, I’m back on the Crowes bandwagon and loving every minute of it.
